Get involved in research

Research makes the NHS better at treating patients. Our aim is to find suitable medications or alternative therapies to treat respiratory and allergic diseases. You may, therefore, be asked if you would be willing to take part in research studies at the NIHR South Manchester Clinical Research Facility.

Your participation in research is entirely voluntary.  You do not have to take part if you do not want to and our staff will not put you under pressure to take part in research at our Unit.

Every research project does however need people to volunteer to take part. If you would like to know more about what taking part in research involves, speak to a doctor or nurse during your clinical appointment at the University Hospital of South Manchester or contact the Facility today on 0161 291 5388.

I enjoy going to the research unit. It's interesting, fun, reassuring and worthwhile.

Ann is combatting her chronic cough by taking part in research with us.

There are many other things that you can do if taking part as a research participant isn’t for you, or if you find that you’re not eligible to take part due to things such as your previous smoking history.  Examples of other ways to get involved include:

  • Help us to apply for funding for new research projects

  • Join a study advisory group and have some influence over how the study is carried out

  • Help us to write information sheets in patient-friendly language

  • Assist us in writing study results for our newsletter in a way that everyone can understand

If you'd like to help in this way, get in touch with our Project Manager today on 0161 291 4168.
